Blog Post #9: Activisim

1.  An issue that we have in the theatre department at LSU is that there is no undergraduate committee that helps to decide which two mainstage shows we do each school year.  This is important because the undergrads need to be represented in this process.  I want to make sure that we'll be doing shows that are relevant to us and something that speaks to us collectively.  Of course not everyone will be happy, but I firmly believe that people will be happier than they are now.

2.  To protest this, I would rally up the undergrads and have them sign a petition stating that we want and undergrad committee to be appointed.  This would be given to Kristen.  Then, I would get everyone to not audition for the mainstage show.  I feel that this would really set things into motion because it's something that could not be ignored.  It would directly effect those above us, and they would have no choice but to do something.  If they didn't, it would make them look bad.  It would make the program look bad to outsiders who found out about it too.

3.  I feel that in the beginning the protest would be much more calm with the petition and forming groups of people who are very passionate about this topic and talking to those higher up.   However, if this was not able to get us what we wanted, we would take a much more active approach with resistance and direct action.

4.  I don't feel that the media is really necessary in this case.  It wouldn't add anything to the protest.  The internet is always a helpful source though.  Getting word out to everyone in the college, to other theatre lovers, to theatre graduates, and I'm sure that those higher up in the theatre department faculty would not like the negative publicity and would be more apt to make a change and meet the demands.
5.  The protest will end when an undergraduate committee is appointed to help decide what plays will be picked for mainstage shows.  Also, you know it's completely over when what they say goes.  They would have the final say so and no one person could overthrow their decision.
